Memorial Day is the time to remember and honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. It is also used as a day to spend time with family and friends to enjoy the start of the warm weather. However, this year celebrating Memorial Day is going to look pretty different, like just about everything else in our lives right now. But just because the weekend will be different doesn’t mean you can’t still have fun. Here are a few ways to spend your weekend.
Spend time outside
- Go on a bike ride- There are tons of beautiful places to take a bike ride in New York. You could go on a bike trail or you could head into the city to look at some beautiful architecture!
- Take a hike- here is a map of all of NYS trails that you can hike!
- Have a fire- If you have a fire pit, what better way to end a beautiful day than with a nice fire and roasting marshmallows?
Have a BBQ with the people you live with
Having a BBQ on Memorial Day is a classic. Usually, you would invite friends and extended family, but this year that isn’t possible, that doesn’t mean you can’t still have a great time with the people you live with! Fire up the grill and turn up the music and have a great day! (Remember Memorial Day gatherings are limited to 10 people in NYS according to Gov. Cuomo on May 29, 2020, during his daily COVID-19 briefing). If you want to have the best BBQ, learn how to become a grill master here.
Watch the Nation Memorial Day Concert on PBS
On Sunday night at 8pm PBS will be hosting a Memorial Day Concert. There will be artists such as Trace Adkins and Sam Elliott! This will be something you won’t want to miss! Learn more here.
Take your boat out
If you have a boat spend the day on your boat (this weekend is supposed to be hot and sunny so bring your sunscreen!)- Check out our boating safety tips!
Bring the vacay to you
There are usually a lot of people who take a long weekend vacation, but, this year they were canceled. Don’t fret though, whatever your vacation was supposed to be, try to recreate it at home. If you were planning on going to the beach, lay out a beach towel, and spend some time in the sun. If you were planning a trip to D.C to go to the Smithsonian Museums- learn how to take a virtual tour here instead!
Whatever you plan on doing this weekend, remember if you do leave your house this weekend wear your face mask and as always practice social distancing so we can continue to stop the spread!
