Home safety is one of your main priorities as a homeowner. You want to make sure the environment you care is suitable for your children and pets. Through a series of easy precautions, you can make your home as safe as possible.
Make it look like someone is home
If you keep a light on and a car parked in your driveway most burglars will not take the risk of getting caught. If you make it appear there is someone home/ awake you will be less likely to get robbed at home.
Don’t leave spare keys in obvious places
Burglars know the common places that people will leave spare keys such as under a plant, door mat, or rock. Make the spot where you keep your spare keys somewhere that isn’t close to the door (still on your property) and isn’t a common place someone would look. Don’t put flammable objects near fire sources (oven/stove top, toaster, portable heater, fireplace)

If its in your kitchen, living room, or bedroom, keep all flammable items away from any fire sources to avoid the risk of causing a fire.
Don’t leave digital footprints for criminals

Home safety goes beyond the actual property of your home, it includes being smart and safe online. Do not post about leaving for long periods of time until you come back home. If a burglar sees a post that you and your family are on vacation or you are on a business trip, they know that it is the perfect time to strike. Keep all information about leaving town private until you are back home.Do not post your address/ phone number. Posting your address or phone number is asking for people to come to your home or try to scam you over the phone. Never share private information online.
Have your property surrounded by a fence

Having a fence around your property will give more of a warning to potential burglars to not come in. It will also provide a security measure to prevent kids and pets from running away.
Keep dangerous items such as tools and poisonous substances out of reach from children and pets
Lock up items such as tools, paint thinner, and rat poison in a high cabinet or a place your children or pets cannot get to.
Use non slip mats in and outside of your shower/bathtub.

Leaving hot hair tools on after you are done using them is a huge risk. There is a risk of a pet or child getting burned or the device starting a fire. Always turn off your straightener or curling iron right after you turn it off.
Lock all doors (including your sliding glass doors)

Home safety is very important and this is the most basic thing you can do! Never forget to lock all doors and windows at night or anytime you leave the house to prevent any possible break ins. Use a doorbell with video (such as SkyBell or Ring)
Consider buying a doorbell with a video camera that detects motion. This will allow you to check on your smartphone to see who is at your door before you even get up. This will also alert you of any detected motion at your doorstep.
