New Year’s Resolution Tips

by | Jan 2, 2020 | organization, Uncategorized, Winter

Remember last year when you decided you would go to the gym 4 days a week and cut Pepsi out of your diet, followed through for a week, and stopped? Don’t feel bad; most people tend to not follow through with their resolutions. As easy as they may seem, changing your day-to-day lifestyle can be hard. Here are a few tips to keep you on track with whatever your New Year’s resolution maybe!

1. Make it achievable and reasonable!

This point is extremely important if you plan on following through with your New Year’s resolution. Of course, it would be incredible to have a perfect beach body within a month but, for most people, that is incredibly unreasonable and almost impossible. With whatever resolution you plan to make, be sure to have a reasonable goal in mind. This not only helps you track your progress in a positive and healthy way, but you are more likely to stick with your goal if you can view your progress.

2. Try to plan ahead

Generally, it is best to already have an idea of a resolution in mind before New Year’s Eve. Planning out what you intend to receive out of making your goals will help you be more prepared and motivated to follow through with your resolution. If your goal is to save more money and spend less, then it would be in your favor to create a budget for each month ahead of time.

3. Stay on track

If you happen to be taking one step forward and two steps back often, you might want to ask yourself why. If you find yourself becoming demotivated to continue your resolution, try to think of a way that might help you get back on track. Let’s say your resolution is to become more organized: Try to get yourself into the rhythm of immediately putting things back after you use them. This will help you to avoid having a huge mess to clean up in the long-run, and it is essentially quicker to clean up this way.

4. Focus on ONE resolution

It is easy to make many resolutions, but extremely hard to follow through with every single one of them. If you try to drastically change your life, you will most likely end up never following through with any resolution and ultimately failing. Pinpoint what you genuinely want to change within your life and choose that one. Once you’ve had the whole year to become accustomed to that resolution, you may be ready to add a new one the following year.

5. Reward your hard work

Rewarding yourself will keep you motivated to maintain your resolution; however, don’t overdo it. If your goal was to stop eating sweets, reward yourself with a slice of cake every 1-2 weeks or so. Eating an entire 3-tier cake every single week will probably make your progress invalid. Self-discipline yourself; only reward your progress if you’ve followed your rules the rest of the time.

6. Have a time frame in mind

Do you plan on keeping this goal for one year? Five years? Your whole life? Whatever resolution you decide to make, be sure to have a clear plan for yourself. Set short-term and long-term goals for yourself to better stay motivated and evaluate your progress. It might help to write your goals down in your calendar to track your progress with your resolution.

7. Have a good support system

You might find yourself wanting to give up at times, or that you can’t go on with your resolution. Having a good network to surround yourself with, whether it be friends or family, is extremely important. Let them know what your plan is so they can help you stay on track when times get tough. Either way, they’ll support you as you follow through with your resolution.

8. Don’t give up

Even if you think you’ve ruined your entire resolution, there is no reason why you can’t try again! If you’re way behind on schedule, then create a new one. It is better to have a few drawbacks than to completely give up on your goal. Set small goals for yourself, then work yourself up to bigger goals when you’re ready to handle it.

Creating and keeping a new year’s resolution can be difficult for anyone. The important aspect to remember is why you created a resolution in the first place. Chances are, you want something within your life to change to make yourself happier, healthier, wealthier, etc. Think about how you’ll feel throughout your progress as you reach your goal and hold onto that through the difficulties you’ll face. Wishing you the best of luck with your New Year’s Resolution; you got this!
